Broad experience with PCB design and prototyping. Can hand-build assemblies with SMT components as small as 0201 or use paste stencils and ovens for builds. Experience selecting critical components, major supplier selection, and working with industrial designers. Most experience with Altium Designer, but also exposed to KiCAD.

Very experienced with building prototypes, including 3D printed parts and refining them for presentations that include working demonstrations. These emphasize operation and appearance for gaining buy-in by important stakeholders.

Familiar with typical manufacturing processes such as injection molding, vacuum forming, rotational molding, laser cutting, sheet metal fabrication, powder coating, surface mount assembly and others.

Professional Experience

2011-Present: Electronics Engineer, Quality and Regulatory Manager

Design of novel flex circuit and contact system as a replacement for wires in a difficult to assemble medical probe.
Designed the evacuation station electronics and pcb’s for early detection of lung cancer without invasive procedures.
Designed a microcurrent stimulator and pcb to treat AMD which is now in feasibility trials.
Designed a series of electronics to control various models of UV-C disinfection chambers, including the user interface and mains control of the lamp ballasts.
Designed a novel wireless TIG welding control, including FCC certification and ISO compliance.
Assisted a medical goods supplier in creating an ISO 9001 quality system and obtaining certification.
Designed electronics for a miniature TENS stimulator with Bluetooth, including rechargeable and disposable battery variants.
Designed hardware and created circuit board layout for a portable touchscreen body impedance analyzer. Oversaw successful EMC and ISO safety compliance testing.
Assisted in the completion of a unique over-the-counter TENS stimulator by writing embedded software in C, PCB layout, test fixture design, test lab compliance, and compiling 510(k) for FDA. The product was subsequently licensed and sold as the IcyHot SmartRelief.
Other projects included evaluation of competitive and predicate devices, evaluation of failures of electronic assemblies, obsolete part replacement.
Also oversaw and maintained the Quality System to ISO 13485 and FDA requirements and participated in audits by FDA and clients.

2006-2011: Engineering Manager, Electronics Engineer

Launched a revolutionary new electrotherapy product line, the first of its kind to use the Windows operating system. The project was performed using very limited internal resources and through the direction of one primary outside contractor. Even with limited resources and several unplanned interruptions, the project was completed in less than 12 months.

1997-2005: Engineering Manager

Successfully managed the design & development of an 18-item product line. Managed engineering staff of 8 and 4 outside contractors. Responsible for all compliance activities.

A low-cost muscle stimulator
A very high-end combination electrotherapy and ultrasound device with microprocessor control and LCD/touch screen user interface
A paraffin bath that featured ease of assembly and low cost.
Departmental responsibilities included preparation of capital expense requests, research and development requests, cash flow analysis, and budget preparation for both the department and projects.

1995-1996: Electronics Engineer

Worked as an electronics design engineer performing hardware integration, prototype testing, design changes and transfer to manufacturing for a completely new product line. These designs included switch-mode power supplies, patient connected circuits, therapeutic ultrasound, and high-speed DSP’s.

1992-1994: Quality Assurance Lab Technician

Managed the Quality Assurance Lab, planning and performing tests on the company’s products. Compiled reports for distribution to engineering to aid in new product development. Created report structure and documentation procedures, scheduled work, specified test equipment and planned the purchasing of equipment and supplies.
